Artists:
The lineup, which is subject to change, is listed below.
Sean Chambers
Sean toured with the legendary Hubert Sumlin as his guitarist and band leader from 1998-2003. Performing extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe together, Chambers recalls this time as being his “College Education” in music. “My band would usually open the show, then take a short break and bring out Hubert for his set. I learned so much during my time playing with Hubert, I consider it my college education.” Sean not only learned at Hubert’s feet, but his own style of the blues began to get noticed by fans and critics as well. During a tour throughout England in 2001 Britain’s own “Guitarist” magazine named Chambers as one of the top 50 blues guitarists of the last century! After his tenure with Mr.Sumlin he later performed 3 more tours throughout England on his own.
Sean has several CD’s out, has been featured in many publications including Living Blues Magazine, and is an amazing bluesman. He has also shared the stage with BB King, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, Greg Allman, Lynyrd Sknyrd, Double Trouble, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tommy Castro, and many many more.
Eddie Wright
Born in 1950 in Bay Shore, Long Island, Ed started his career in music playing tuba at age 8. He started playing guitar in 1963, learning folksongs from friends. In 1980 Ed started his first all blues band, “The Almost Brothers Blues Band”. According to Ed, “We played up and down Long Island inventing our own blues scene, and spawning some blues band and blues players along the way.” One of his fondest memories is opening for Albert Collins, which he considered a real treat and privilege. Soon, Ed would hook up with Damon Fowler, and the two rocked out the Tampa blues scene.
His debut all-acoustic CD, “JUST WRIGHT”, was recorded at Media Central Studios in Brandon. He is a talented bluesman who has shared the stage and spotlight with loads of talent.
The Backwater Blues Band
Backwater Blues Band plays a unique style of music with a full rich sound that moves audiences with powerful ballads and upbeat arrangements of traditional, contemporary, and original blues. Since 1997 the band has entertained music lovers of all ages in a variety of venues from small pubs to large festivals. The band’s influences and sound are a range of rockin’ Texas blues, soulful Chicago blues, and funky New Orleans blues. The Backwater Blues Band is constantly adding new songs to their repertoire while keeping their current arrangements fresh.
Whether on the dance floor or tapping their feet at their table, audiences not only hear, but feel the richly spiced arrangements that have been described as having a subtle coolness and smooth funk- known as the Backwater groove.
Lee Pons
Lee is an extremely talented and avid musician, winning awards and rockin’ the keyboard at joints regularly around his home town of Florida. His brand new CD is an excellent showcase of his larger than life abilities, as well as his deeply rooted influences such as Professor Longhair, Dr John, Ray Charles, among others!
Lee was born and raised in the Streets of Tuscaloosa (or someplace like that)! His father, his biggest influence, was a musician with big bands such as Harry Belefonte, Duke Ellington and Danny Kaye. Following in his father’s footsteps, by sixteen Lee was already playing in clubs around town and later attended Julliard School of Music, earning 2 degrees. He plays a variety of different instruments and styles of music but his real love is rockin’ the 88s playing Jazz and Blues on his keyboards.

Bluesman John Lee Hooker Jr. Drops "Live in Istanbul, Turkey" CD Releases New Animated Blues Video"Extramarital Affair"

San Francisco - There is something keenly energetic about a 'live' album. And when bluesman John Lee Hooker, Jr. shouts "Istanbul, are you ready for the blues?" at the onset of his newly released CD, "Live in Istanbul, Turkey" you can feel the electricity in the stadium. "Live in Istanbul, Turkey" on Hooker, Jr.'s own Steppin' Stone Records and the European label Jazzhaus Records, proves to be yet another notch in the Grammy nominated artist's belt. Hooker explodes with fiery intensity as he sets the audience on fire at the Efes Pilsen Blues Festival, proving that the blues are indeed an international language understood around the world.
"Live in Istanbul, Turkey" showcases the son of the late iconic blues legend, John Lee Hooker, not only performing classics from his previously released albums, but also introducing three new songs as well. In addition, as the first blues artist to tap hip hop's reach with animated music videos, the CD boast yet another addition to this legacy. The bonus video "Extramarital Affairs," co-conceived and co-produced by Frenchman Laurent Mercier at the Callicore Animation Studios in Paris, captures, in vivid black and white, the torrid escapades of a background musician's illicit affair with a mistress that Hooker Jr. calls "tales of the road." "Extramarital Affair" is the third in a series of blues animations from Hooker, Jr. and Mercier.
"One of the greatest and most exciting things that has ever happened in my career, was the blessed chance to go to Istanbul and perform in front of the wonderful Turkish people," expresses Hooker, Jr. "To have done my very first live CD is of course, monumental, but to have performed and recorded in front of the greatest and most exciting crowd ever was surreal. I was and am overjoyed by this achievement!"
"Live In Istanbul, Turkey" is a treasure chest of gems. Hooker, Jr. and his band infuse their performances with the fuel generated from an audience of thousands of live fans. Tracks like "Suspicious," "Maudie" and "Doin' the Boogie" bust at the musical seams as the blues soar to magical funk-laden realms. The inclusion of new songs, "It's a Shame," "You Make My Life Brand New" and "They Hatin' On Me" recorded at the Pajama Studio in Oakland, CA serve to extend the life of the CD's party.
John Lee Hooker Jr. was born in Detroit "Motor" City with Delta blues-filled blood running through his Motown veins. As the son of the great John Lee Hooker, he was exposed to the life of the blues from a young age. Unfortunately, while living the "life of a bluesman" he succumbed to the demons that surround it, derailing his musical career for many, many years. Drugs, alcohol, divorce, incarceration, and near death almost brought his once promising career to a screeching halt. But it was living the blues and his faith in the Almighty that resurrected him
Now from the gravely blues of the Detroit streets to a new era of sound; from the shadow of his father's accomplishments to standing apart from his namesake; from criminal to animated blues video hero; from San Quentin Prison to the Red Carpet, and the United States to Turkey, John Lee Hooker Jr. keeps forging new ground with a deep-rooted sound. The blues are not only here to stay, but are being embraced around the world. "Live in Istanbul, Turkey" is his musical contribution to world peace as we all rock in unison!

Ahoora’s story is about struggle and suppression.
Every great musician or band has a story to tell. Stories about artists learning to love themselves, about fighting addictions, about beating the nay-sayers and becoming something more than anyone thought was possible. These stories are what make music more than just lyrics and melodies. These stories are what connect the listeners to the music. These stories are what cause those listeners to think and feel. These stories are what cause changes in the world and Radio Submit is helping to bring the world together by helping artists such as Ahoora to get their music to radio stations and ultimately, fans around the world.

The Iranian government is sensitive to the cultural influence of the West into the Middle East and one such easy influence is through music. Iran encourages musicians to explore classical and regional music instead of other genres. The Islamic Revolution of 1979 banned the listening to, playing of, and imitation of all Western style music in Iran. Iranian musicians face tough government sanctioned censorship laws. All concerts and album releases must follow strict requirements and receive government approval through a board. These requirements hinder the development of music other than regionally influenced or classical music, therefore eliminating most genres of music, and suppressing women from pursuing music careers. Playing, much less recording and releasing, music is difficult; most of the time it is impossible.
Ahoora was formed in 2001 by Kiavash Kia and Milad Tangshir in Tehran, Iran. Playing primarily progressive heavy metal, the band originally used Persian lyrics blended with heavy metal music. Over time the band has changed members and currently includes Tangshir, vocalist Ashkan Hadavand, and bassist Mamy Baei. Their sound has also evolved into indie modern rock.
The band’s first official gig happened in May of 2005. It marked the first concert ever in Iran that incorporated heavy metal music and vocals. While the band’s music was eagerly anticipated by excited audience members, the show was cancelled after the first night. In 2006, the band released the self titled album, Ahoora. Due to the constraints set by the Iranian government, the band had to independently record and produce the album. The album, despite being outlawed in Iran and still somehow being recorded, was absorbed by an international audience with open arms. The album received rave reviews from foreign fans and opened Ahoora to an entirely new audience and promising opportunities.
The band received notice of their first new opportunity in late 2006. Ahoora was invited to play in Washington, D.C. at the Evergreen Music Festival. Iran’s tough exit laws forced the band to miss the irreplaceable opportunity. The band received more disappointing news in 2007 when the exit laws again forced them to miss another performing opportunity at Metal Camp.
Exit laws were not the only constraint Ahoora faced in 2006. A concert was planned in Iran to celebrate the release of the band’s first album, but the show was cancelled by authorities. Ahoora was viewed as a forbidden act. The band was trying to create new music but was not allowed to rehearse, record, or perform. Somehow, they put together a second album, All in Blood with You, and released it in 2007. Like Ahoora, the album was a huge success in foreign markets.
Despite facing adversity, the band released a new album, Awkward Diary, and has received air time over internet and foreign radio. They have struggled against tough Iranian censorship laws and somehow survived.
Currently, the band’s main goal is to get out of Iran. “Our major goal for now is leaving Iran, because in order to survive we must exit Iran and the best way is booking gigs; we need to have this chance to perform outside of Iran, on a free stage,” Tangshir explains. The band has already proved their music is successful enough to be in the music market, but they now need the chance to expand, experiment, and see where they can take their music next.
Ahoora may seem like just another rock band. They may dress and act like just another rock band. But Ahoora faces a different set of limitations than other rock bands. Ahoora is fighting against censorship, rules, and regulations which should eliminate the existence of the band entirely. Ahoora’s story is about struggle and suppression, but it is also about hope and change. Ahoora is the band that brought the world rock from Iran when it wasn’t possible. Ahoora is the band changing the world one song at a time.
